How to Handle Wine Stains on Carpet

Your house is not a museum. Accidents and spills are bound to happen. Some spills are especially dreaded, like wine spills. Wine spills, particularly red wine spills, are notorious for leaving bright stains behind on carpet. Even when addressed, they can just be downright difficult to tackle. That’s why we want to share our best tips on how to get rid of wine stains on carpet with you.

Time is of the Essence

Once a stain sets, it bonds to the carpet fibers all the way down to the padding. That is why old wine stains are best patched. For the most part, though, people are around when wine spills. Which means that you can act fast before the wine has time to set. Always use a clean, white cloth, and always blot the liquid. Never use a rubbing motion!

Rummage Through the Spice Cupboard

Once you have blotted most of the liquid up, go to your spice cabinet and grab your table salt. Salt will naturally draw up any remaining liquid in the carpet fibers. Just pour a pile of salt all over the affected area and leave it overnight. You will know that the salt has worked if it is pink in color in the morning. Afterwards, just vacuum the salt pile up.

Borrow from the First Aid Kit

If the stain is not fully removed after these two steps, you can borrow some hydrogen peroxide from your first aid kit. Simply soak a cloth in 3 percent peroxide and dab the stain with it. Allow the peroxide to dwell on the stain for five minutes and then blot the area dry with a clean cloth. Keep in mind that hydrogen peroxide will bleach darker carpets, so test an inconspicuous portion of your carpet, like the inside of a closet, before you use this method.

If you have tried all these methods and the wine stain simply will not come out, contact Carpet Stretch & Rescue for help. We can remove and replace carpets with stubborn stains. Good as new!
