Carpets can make a home feel comfortable and warm. They can create an inviting space, but they can just as easily achieve the opposite effect if they have become dingy and worn down. When carpets become dirty and unappealing, it is usually the result of improper care over time. You can prevent a great deal of buildup and keep your carpets looking fresh with regular care, however. And doing so does not have to be particularly labor intensive either. Here are a few simple ways that you can keep your carpet in good condition for as long as possible.
Vacuuming is one of the easiest ways to maintain the look of your carpets. No doubt you already vacuum, but if you are worried about your carpets becoming dingy, upping the frequency can help. Vacuuming removes dirt and debris before it has a chance to settle into your carpet fibers and it also combs through the piles to keep them fluffy and soft.
Jumping off vacuuming, sprinkling baking soda over your carpets every few weeks will do well to deodorize and refresh them. Simply sprinkle the baking soda over the length of the carpet and then vacuum it away. Baking soda can also come in handy if you ever need to battle oil that has been spilled on your carpets.
Accidents are inevitable. The key to ensuring that they do not leave a lasting mark is to tackle any spills as soon as you notice them. The longer you allow them to sit on top of your carpet, the more likely they are to settle in for good. When treating a spot, be sure not to rub into the carpet. Instead, blot the area with a clean white towel. Make sure to vacuum over the spot when you are through.
And the last tip we want to share is to remove your shoes when you walk in the door. Your shoes come into contact with a lot of dirty things throughout your day. If you do not want to track soil and grime into your carpets, simply removing them at the door is an easy solution.
By practicing these habits, your carpets are sure to look good for as long as possible. Sometimes an accident will occur that you cannot easily fix though, such as burns.
