Keep Your Carpet Puppy Damage Free

Keep Your Carpet Puppy Damage Free

With the pandemic, more and more people are deciding to get puppies. This is a great option if you are working from home and are wanting a little furry thing to help with your anxiety. However, there are a lot of other aspects of having a puppy other than being cute and cuddly. Dogs have to be potty trained and they all go through a teething phase. This poses some challenges when you are wanting to keep your carpet puppy damage free. Here at Carpet Stretch and Rescue we will help you make the best of the training process with your puppy and keep your carpet free from any damage.

Potty Training

The best way to eliminate puppy pee on your carpet is to not allow them on the carpet until they are fully potty trained. Getting a gate to keep them out of the carpeted areas in the best way to do this. They need to earn that freedom once they have been fully house broken.

To help them catch on quicker and save you from having to clean up a lot of pee you will want to crate train them during the night. This is an important step in the process. Keeping them in a small enough space that they will not want to go potty in there will force them to cry in the middle of the night to let know. You then will form a pattern of showing them where it is ok to pee. During the day you want to take them outside every two hours at least and then about 20 minutes after they eat or drink anything. Take them outside if they have just settled down from playing as well. Being consistent in this will help them to understand where they are supposed to go to the bathroom.

Teething

You may get to the point that they are potty trained and are on the carpet but are now teething. During this time, they may want to bite and pull up on the carpet. If you do not want a hole, then you are going to need to be consistent at keeping an eye on them. When you catch them doing this, redirect their attention elsewhere with a toy or chew item. Being repetitive in this will help them to understand that you do not want them doing that. Of course, you can tell them no and sometimes should, but this should be kept to a minimum. Dogs do better with positive reinforcement. So, make sure to give plenty of that when they start to chew on their toy.

With teething you want to make sure that you are giving them what they need to get through that terrible time. This means bones and chew toys that can keep them occupied. Butchers will usually keep raw bones that you can purchase for dogs. This is really good for their teeth. Such bones will have bone marrow in them which is great for your little puppy. Make sure to do further research that it is safe for your puppy to have a raw bone. You will want to make sure it is safe for him to eat it if he is on a kibble diet.

These are just two ways to be able to help protect your carpet from any damage your puppy could potentially cause. If you find your dog is peeing on your carpet a lot in the same spot or has torn it up, then do not freak out. We are able to preform a carpet patch so that it takes away any smells and makes it look like nothing ever happened in the first place. Give us a call today to set up your project!
