How to Keep Your Carpet Mold Free

How to Keep Your Carpet Mold Free

There are many problems that can potentially plague your carpets. At Carpet Stretch and Rescue, we know because we have seen them. One of the most dreaded is quite possibly mold. Mold can be a huge issue because it can affect the smell of your home, it can be a breeding ground for bacteria, and by the time you notice it, it has already been living in your carpet padding for some time. Because mold typically settles into your carpet padding before coming to the surface, it can be extremely difficult to get rid of. Save yourself the trouble of trying to get rid of carpet mold with these helpful tips on how to prevent it in the first place.

Manage the Humidity

Mold and humidity? BFFs. Your strongest defense against mold is to keep the moisture levels down. This can be a special challenge if you have carpet in your basement or by sliding glass doors, but it can be done. Portable dehumidifiers are excellent tools that you can put to good use. Place them in areas where humidity tends to run higher than 65%. You can also keep air flowing by cracking windows and doors when it is reasonable to do so.

Manage the Temperature

Temperatures ranging above 80 degrees work really well in welcoming mold. You can combat this by using your AC unit, of course. In addition to that, you can help keep temps down and air circulating by placing portable fans in areas of your home that tend to be more prone to heat and humidity.

Manage the Dirt

Keeping your carpets clean is another great way to discourage mold from settling in. Dirt brought in from shoes or that floated in from an open window can sometimes have mold spores contained in it. Vacuuming weekly and hitting your carpets with a good shampoo occasionally, is important when waging war with mold.

Manage the Material

Science shows that mold develops much easier on natural materials, like wool, than synthetic materials. If it is within your power, such as if you are planning on getting new carpet anyway, you may want to choose carpets made of things like nylon or olefin for the areas of your home that have a higher chance of harboring mold.

Hopefully, this little guide can help you on your journey to remain mold-free. These tips are relatively easy and inexpensive to enact, all it takes is a little bit of mindfulness. If your carpet is suffering from stubborn stains or buckling due to things like humidity, be sure to give us a call! We specialize in carpet patching and stretching and can have your carpet looking as good as new at just a fraction of the cost of full replacement.
