Keep the Campfires and Mud Off Your Carpet

This has been a hot summer, and we hope you have been enjoying it to the full. There is nothing quite like packing up the gear, hitting the open road, and spending a weekend camping under the stars. Maybe you had a chance to roast some marshmallows or hike through rugged mountain trails. But then you get home, and have to haul all your gear through inside. Suddenly you realize your boots, backpacks, and camping gear have brought half of the great outdoors straight onto your living room carpet! Yikes! But don't panic—you don't have to choose between your love of camping and clean floors. In this article we will go over some of the easiest ways to keep your carpets safe from camp dirt and mud so you don’t have to sacrifice time enjoying the outdoors.

Set Up a "Basecamp" Landing Zone

When you return from a trip, excitement is high and fatigue is real, making it tempting to drop your heavy gear right inside the entryway.

• The Fix: Create an intentional drop-zone right by your front or garage door before anyone steps onto the main carpet. Lay down a heavy-duty washable rug, a rubber boot tray, or a large tarp.
• The Rule: All muddy hiking boots, dusty camping chairs, and sleeping bags stay right there in the landing zone until they are shaken out and cleaned!

Shake, Brush, and Vacuum Before It Enters the House

Tents, canvas chairs, and sleeping pads are notorious for holding onto fine sand, dried mud, and tiny pine needles that weave themselves deep into fabric.

• The Fix: Before tossing your camping gear into the washing machine or storing it in the closet, take your tents and ground tarps outside and give them a vigorous shake. Use a soft brush to knock dried dirt off the soles of your hiking boots before you cross the threshold.

Combat the Dreaded "Camp Dust"

Even if you manage to keep the big chunks of mud outside, camping trips generate a fine, powdery dust that clings to everything—your clothes, your gear, and your hair! When you sit on your living room sofa or carpet after a trip, that invisible dust settles deep into the carpet fibers.

• The Fix: Give your high-traffic carpeted areas a thorough vacuuming within 24 hours of returning home. Use slow, overlapping passes with your vacuum cleaner to pull up that fine particulate before it grinds into the carpet backing underfoot.

What If the Dirt Left Its Mark?

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, a stubborn mud stain or a ground-in campfire soot smudge finds its way onto the carpet.

• Act Fast on Mud: If you spot a dried mud stain, let it dry completely first! Trying to wipe wet mud only pushes it deeper into the fibers. Once dry, vacuum up the loose flakes, then dab gently with a mixture of warm water and a tiny drop of mild dish soap.
